AI is in your backpack already. It’s on your phone, in your GPS, in the apps you use for school, and in the tools that can write, solve, summarize, and generate almost anything. So when schools block AI, are they keeping kids safe, or skipping the part where students learn how to use it wisely? We dig into that tension with Dora Palfi, co-founder and CEO of Imagi, who helps classrooms introduce AI, computer science, and computational thinking through creative, hands-on learning.

Should Kids Still Learn to Code?

We talk about the big shift from “coding as a superpower” to a world where prompting and AI collaboration are becoming everyday skills. Dora explains vibe coding: prompting an AI to build a game or website, then improving it through feedback, debugging, and better requirements. Along the way, we break down computational thinking in plain language, including clear instructions, decomposition, and the habit of not trusting the first AI output. If you’re a middle schooler or high schooler wondering how to use ChatGPT-style tools without letting them do all the thinking, you’ll get real strategies that protect your voice and your learning.

We also get concrete about what schools and families can do: designing assignments that reward understanding (in-class writing, oral explanations, presentations), making project-based work more ambitious, and treating AI access as an equity issue, not just a cheating issue. We share a simple way to start this week, plus beginner-friendly resources like Hour of AI. If you care about AI literacy for kids, classroom AI policy, student privacy, and helping students build real portfolios without losing human agency, this one’s for you. Subscribe, share with a parent or teacher, and leave a review with your take: what’s one rule that would make AI use fair at school?
